We often want to believe that the worst could never happen. Adults seem to understand that accidents can absolutely occur, but it’s rare for us to really think about what could happen if we actually lost our home. Even if you live alone, a house fire might end up destroying so much of what you worked to earn. Of course, if you live with your family, your home represents a place of comfort or safety, and a house fire can devastate that perception for a long time. House fires aren’t the only fires to worry about - there are usually over 100,000 wildfires every year in the U.S. alone.

Luckily, there are some easy steps you can take to ensure that you can prevent house fires before they happen. While they certainly don’t guarantee that you’ll never have a house fire, it certainly helps the odds in your favor. Here are three steps that you can take to make sure that your house, home, condo, and/or apartment are protected from a potential house fire as much as possible. If fire damage does occur, consider contacting a fire damage restoration professional as soon as possible.

No Indoor Smoking

If you are a big smoker, you certainly aren’t alone. In fact, there are somewhere around 1 billion smokers on the planet. While there are some that certainly smoke more than others, the truth is that there are a certain percentage that smoke at home.

Consider banning smoking in your home because of the potential safety hazard. The last thing that you want is a dinner party guest burning down your home because he or she was careless. You can offer ashtrays outside to encourage anyone who comes to your house to smoke outside, and only outside.

Keep Flammable Materials Away

There are so many products that we use in our daily lives that are actually flammable, and it’s important to keep these objects away from fire of all kinds. Some examples of flammable items in the household are nail polish, flour, non-dairy creamer, and even hand sanitizer. Make sure that none of these items are near either lighters or heat sources of any kind. If it’s a fuel, adhesive, thinner, or something similar, consider keeping it very far away from fire or any source of fire. Remember: this also includes candles!

Test Your Alarms

The last thing that you want is to find out that your smoke alarms and/or smoke detectors don’t work. This might mean the difference between life and death. For example, if there is a fire while you are sleeping - an alarm might be the difference between you and your family members waking up. If you always make sure that your alarms and detectors are charged, this can give you and the family peace of mind that is priceless! It might be worth it to test your smoke alarms every month or so, as well.
